In Kenya, our libraries are located in and around Ukunda, close to the Indian Ocean and about 30 km south of Mombasa.
The container that is shipped from the UK is converted into a library building and stocked with books and other items that it contained. Further books are donated to local schools and other organisations. If you are an organisation, library, school or orphanage from other locations in Kenya and you’d like to receive books as a donation, please fill in the form and return it to us. We will consider your request and inform you of our decision.
Our aim is to create one new library every two years, and possibly faster if we receive sufficient donations.
The process of converting a container into a library can be seen in our YouTube videos of the first two libraries at Dzunga and Chidzangoni, and in the photographs and information on the Dzunga and Chidzangoni pages on this site.
We have worked with the local communities from well before the container arrives, and create a playground in the community first as part of the process (see What We Do)
Once the library is complete, it is maintained by local volunteers. Our two established libraries each have over 1,000 members and 250 visits per month, and run informal reading, writing and arts and crafts classes. We also continue to support our libraries once they are in place, and our Community Engagement throughout is a key part of ensuring that what we do achieves successful results.
